Fab Data was set up to provide clarity in a world with too much information. Decision makers don’t need long, rambling documents, they need reliable, robust, messages to help them identify challenges, solutions and ensure they are implemented well. Fab Data has been doing this for many years, specialising in ensuring that the real power of data is used to ensure children learn.

How We Got Started
In our work with governments and NGOs, we’ve seen the benefits of bringing together different data sets and applying data science techniques. We understand the data analytics needs of the education sector.
Our Founders
Dr Paul Atherton and María José Ogando Portela are education economists and statisticians. They have held senior positions at DFID, ODI, GEC and Oxford University. Former Image Source Head of Development, Kevin Pye, joins us to provide technical leadership of our machine learning and analytical tools.
Our Vision
Education data is improving but it can be better. We provide NGOs, governments, foundations and donors with data in its most useful form and data analytics tools that support better informed decisions.
Strategic Partnerships
As well as our knowledge products we also enter into strategic partnerships with clients to develop bespoke long term data services – at the system level; or at the school level.
Our Team
Our core team includes education experts, software developers and data scientists and is complemented by a creative director and product manager.
Kevin Pye
Chief Technology Officer
Kev makes the ideas come to life, bringing a wealth of tech experience and programming skills to build the systems that underpin it all.
Dr Oliver Garrod
Chief Data Scientist
After 15 years in academia developing research software and analysis pipelines, Oliver joined the company to apply his experience to an exciting new set of problems. His experience is primarily in image processing, digital signal processing, and analysis and rendering of 2D/3D geometry, but he is generally interested in all aspects of programming, maths, and statistics.

Software Developer
Eugenio is a software developer and lead on back end development of apps, data dashboards and online planning tools.
Dr Paul Atherton
Managing Director
Paul has been on a long journey in education, working to ensure that information is used sensibly to improve children’s futures. Fab Data spins out of his successful advisory firm Fab Inc, which he set up after many years in Government and academia.
María José Ogando Portela
Director
Majo brings a wealth of experience in how data are gathered, processed and analysed – with invaluable experience out collecting the data and working in Government to process it.
Dr Meng Liu
Data Scientist
Meng is a data analyst and works on back end development and data visualisation. He has recently finished a PhD in computational neuroscience.
Dan Amias
Product Manager
Dan is the product manager and joins us after gaining unique experience working in the Ministry of Finance of Rwanda in donor engagement, and managing scale up projects of EdTech and data technologies in Ethiopia, Kenya, and South Africa.
Guy Benton
UX & Creative Direction
Guy is our Creative Director specialising in UX, graphic design and communications. He ensures that our product design focuses on, and communicates directly to, the needs of end users.
